April 2008 Small Groups
Critical Concerns: Conversations on Racial Justice
Facilitator: Debbie Headley & Lynn Clouser Holt
Location: Library
Dates: April 2 – April 30th
Racism has been called American’s “original sin.” Struggles around affirmative action, welfare and immigration reform, and other policies show that the racial divide in the US wasn’t healed by the civil rights era. Just several weeks ago Presidential candidate, Baraq Obama, delivered a speech that brought to the foreground the continual issues regarding race and their impact in our society.
The first 4 weeks of this course will use the content of Senator Obama’s speech and some materials from Sojouners: Christians & Racial Justice, to begin a dialogue about racism. Three questions will guide our dialogue:
1) What can we learn about America?
2) What can we learn about people of other races?
3) What can we learn about ourselves?
The goal is not agreement, but a deeper understanding of the background and factors that influence racism.
Obama’s speech and questions are available in the foyer or at this link:

Please come prepared with the speech read prior to class on April 2nd.
